Puppy Tips
-
Stay consistent with routine. Feed at same time, naps at same time, etc.
-
While potty training watch when they drink water so you know when to take them out potty. Take water away at 6pm. This helps prevent them from having accidents during the night.
-
puppy's will try to get away with anything. building trust and a relationship with your new pup is so important. We recommend hand feeding at least half the bowl of food to them along with calling their name and when they come reward them. putting them on a leash and telling them to come gives them no option but to come. you can slowly and gently pull them in saying come and rewarding them.
-
If the pup is not being watched, put them in their crate. do not give them freedom to the house. To help them clam down in their crate and make it a positive thing, give a long lasting high quality treat and put a blanket over their crate.
-
to help with potty/house training and teaching the pup to be calm put them on a leash either on a doorknob or in your hand and ignore the puppy and reward when calm. This teaches them to be calm and makes sure the pup is not free to wander the house.
-
Play desensitize videos on YouTube while pup is eating, eating treats, playing, etc. this helps the pup not to react and make it a positive thing.
-
take the puppy in the car to stores, car washes, etc. and let them people/dog watch. do not let anyone pet them or it will teach the pup to react when they are older.
-
After playing rough let them calm down for at least 30 minutes before drinking water. After eating let the food settle for at least 30 minutes before playing.
-
Keep the puppy busy with puzzles, enrichment toys, and long lasting treats! we love yak chews, pig ears, puff and plays, and sniffle mats!
-
be VERY careful with taking your pup places. Follow the "no paws on ground guide" until they are at least 6 months old. We still encourage you to be very careful where you take your dog. we don't recommend taking your dog to dark parks ever. even with being vaccinated they can still get deadly diseases. After going on walks we recommend wiping their paws off if they do not have shoes.
